Michael Joseph Jackson
(August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Dubbed the “King of Pop.” Michael was one of the most popular entertainers in the world, and the best selling musical artist the year of his death. Jackson’s contributions to music, dance, and fashion, combined with his well publicized personal life made him a global figure in pop culture for more than four decades.
Michael was the eighth child of the Jackson family. He made his professional debut in 1964 with his elder brothers as a member of the Jackson 5. He then began his solo career in 1971 at Motown Records. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a prominent figure in popular music as his music videos, including Beat It, Billie Jean and Thrilles from his 1982 album Thriller, broke racial barriers and also transformed the video music medium into an art form. The popularity of these videos helped bring the television channel MTV to a large audience.
