Robert Redford
After reading in the New York Post that philanthropist Mary Lasker was set to host a cocktail party benefiting ex-Kennedy staffer Wayne Owens, I captured this very fashionable shot of Robert Redford. While waiting at the curb for arrivals and not knowing whom to expect, I saw a tanned Redford emerge from his limo wearing his aviator sunglasses. I snapped five frames—the first shot turned out the best! This iconic shot has sold many times at my fine art galleries, and GQ magazine even published it twice, running it both times as a full-page. I used it for the front and back cover of my book, The Photographs of Ron Galella. In April 2002, Redford was leaving Cipriani’s after the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Sundance Institute when I gave him a signed copy of The Photographs of Ron Galella with a print of the same photo on the front and back cover. He accepted graciously and said, “I love you, Ron.”
